Prenatal depression
Pregnancy is a crucial part in the life of a woman. It is a period in which there are physical, emotional and psychological changes. It involves lot of stress and changes in moods. The depression that is developed at this stage of life is called a prenatal depression. It may occur during pregnancy or immediately after the delivery of the baby or may be sometime later in a few weeks or months or even after a year. On the other side, a postnatal depression occurs after the child birth. It is very mild and can be cured in a short period. The main cause or reason for prenatal depression that the mother complains is the feeling of disassociation with the baby.
The symptoms that are most prevalent when in prenatal depression are
a) Lack of concentration
b) Irregular sleeping habits
c) Fatigue
d) Feeling of anxiousness
e) Irritability
f) Change of diet
During pregnancy the hormonal change always tend to cause mood swings. This cannot be misinterpreted to be depression. But however it is found in most cases. Even the stress and low mental as well as physical health of a woman can cause a prenatal depression.
Depression drugs may be used but only on advice of the physician. Care should be taken as they should not affect the health of the baby.
